07 March 2016
It is reported that as of late September this year the construction of main operational system of the FY-4 satellite will be completed. It is scheduled to launch at the end of 2016.
The FY-4 series is China's second generation of geostationary meteorological satellites. It is expected to replace FY-2. The satellite attitude is three-axis stabilized to improve the time resolution of observations and regional mobility. The new generation satellites are designed with an enhanced imagery scanning capability, designed for monitoring small and medium scale weather systems.
The FY-4 satellite will be advantageous in weather forecasting, numerical weather prediction, disastrous weather monitoring, space weather and environment observations, etc. It will give a strong impetus to China's meteorological development.
