Pléiades acquired this image, on 17 April 2019, after fire destroyed parts of the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral in France. The 850-year-old Gothic building's roof and steeple has collapsed following the blaze on 15 April 2019.
Earth Observation Missions
NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) mission launched in December 2018. From its perch aboard the International Space Station, GEDI's powerful lasers create detailed 3D maps of Earth's forests and topography – providing innovative and unique spaceborne observations. In January 2019, GEDI's lasers were turned on for the first time and the instrument is now giving scientists a first glimpse of the insights it will provide in the coming years.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in visited Turkmenistan last week as part of a tour of Central Asian republics, and pledged South Korean expertise in helping the country to develop its first remote sensing satellite.
Did you know?
After substantial investments to build and launch sensors designed to observe the atmosphere, numerical weather and climate prediction have benefited greatly from the assimilation of satellite data. The overall improvement in forecasts include advances in modeling, computer power and observations. Satellite observations have also enabled fantastic advances in situational awareness for forecasters.

Come and hear about the latest trends in EO! The Φ-week will include a variety of events (e.g. inspiring talks, workshops, roundtables, startup pitch, hackathons) to connect multi-disciplinary communities - from EO researchers, data scientists, non-space corporates, tech leaders, entrepreneurs, up to startup and innovators - to (i) explore together how EO Open Science and innovation can benefit from the latest digital technologies and (ii) help shape FutureEO missions and services.

EO Missions Database
Visit the eoPortal database to find out about spaceborne EO missions and sensors to discover more about past, operational and future missions. This is complemented with detailed articles of airborne sensors.
This database is based on the book of Herbert J. Kramer Observation of the Earth and its Environments and describes over 600 missions in detail. Online updated version of "Earth Observation History of Technical Introduction" available as of January 02, 2017.
